Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Shrubs 1–2 m tall.

Stems: Stems few–branched, rounded to angular, pubescent with multicellular hairs or glabrate.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple. Opposite or in whorls of 3–4 per node, borne on upper 3–5 nodes. Those leaves at a node unequal, symmetrical to asymmetrical, narrowly elliptic to elliptic, 7–16 cm long, 2.5–3.5 cm wide. Apex attenuate to long-acuminate. Base attenuate. Upper surfaces sparsely bullate hirsute to occasionally hirtellous; lower surfaces moderately velvety short–pilose; somewhat thickened, chartaceous. Margins serrate. Petioles 1–3.5 cm long, base sometimes clasping the stem or perfoliate. Stipules absent.

Flowers: Flowers 1(2) in cymes arising in the leaf axils, densely short–villous, peduncles stout, 8–18(–25) mm long, pedicels stout, 12–34 mm long, bracts foliaceous, distinct or occasionally connate, ovate, 12–24 mm long. Flowers bisexual (perfect). Calyx 2–5(6)-lobed, nearly actinomorphic, green(?) when fresh, thin, (17–)20–27 mm long, cleft ¼–1⁄2 its length, sometimes splitting further after anthesis, the lobes foliaceous, elliptic, moderately short–pilose, glabrous within, apex acute to obtuse, deciduous or persistent in fruit. Corolla usually bilabiate, white, tube narrowly funnelform, slightly curved, 16–18 mm long, ca. 7 mm in diameter medially, glabrous to sparsely pilose, upper lip 2-lobed, lower lip 3-lobed, the lobes imbricate in bud, upper lobes oblong–ovate, ca. 10 mm long, ca. 8 mm wide, lower lobes oblong–ovate, ca. 11–12 mm long, ca. 8–9 mm wide. Stamens 5, inserted about halfway up corolla tube, the 2 upper Stamens fertile, others staminodial, +/– with abortive anthers; fertile anthers coherent positioned in throat of corolla tube, dithecal, opening by longitudinal slits or occasionally by apical pores. Ovary superior, oblong–ovoid, 2-carpellate, 1-celled, placentation parietal, placentas 2, ± intruded, rarely joined in center and dividing ovary into 2 cells; ovules numerous, anatropous, glabrous, apex rounded or with a stylar beak; style 3–6 mm long, glabrous; stigma capitate, 2-lobed, lobes usually elliptic.

Fruit: Fruit a fleshy or firm berry; white; ovoid; 1.4–1.6 cm long; glabrous; often tipped by the persistent stylar beak. Seeds unknown.

Ploidy:

Habitat: Known from along streams and gulches in mesic valleys to wet forest.

Elevation Range: 915–1,130 m.
